The R meant
something.

🐍

The Cobra R was not conceived simply as another high-performance Mustang. The philosophy was considerably more focused: reduce unnecessary equipment, strengthen the chassis and prepare the car for serious performance use.

Across its limited-production appearances, the R designation represented a Mustang that placed function ahead of comfort.

The 2000 model became perhaps the most visually unmistakable expression of that idea β€” with its enormous rear wing, aggressive front splitter, side-exit exhaust and naturally aspirated 5.4-litre V8.

A 5.4-litre DOHC V8, six-speed manual, independent rear suspension and unmistakable aerodynamic hardware.

R

Road car.
Race intent.

The 2000 Cobra R represented an unusually uncompromising factory Mustang. Equipment normally expected in a road car was sacrificed in favour of performance.

Its naturally aspirated V8, Tremec six-speed, independent rear suspension, Brembo braking hardware and aerodynamic package made the car fundamentally different from an ordinary Mustang GT.
